The Religion of Money in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby - Essay

The Religion of Money in The Great Gatsby   â â Near the start of George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara, Mr. Undershaft shouts in answer of another's inquiry, well, I am a mogul, and that is my religion (Shaw 103). Numerous individuals look toward the sky looking for the ability to empower them to live on the planet. Others, similar to Shaw's Mr. Undershaft, look toward all the more natural subjects to acquire their capacity and represent their status. Regularly these subjects, for example, cash, riches, or physical excellence and capacity, give their proprietors an oppressive feeling of influence and capacity in the entirety of that they do. A few people become so fixated on their materialistic force that it turns into their religion and leads them in everything that they do. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, the character of Tom Buchanan is presented and depicted as somebody who has permitted his physical capacities, cash, and riches, become his religion and lead him in his activities, saw considerations and con victions, and discourse.  Scratch, the principal individual storyteller of The Great Gatsby, presents Tom as a national figure as it were, one of those men who arrive at such an intense restricted greatness at twenty-one that everything subsequently appreciates of let-down (Fitzgerald 10). In school at New Haven, Tom depended on his physical capacities, as one of the most remarkable closures that at any point played football (Fitzgerald 10), just as acquired riches to give him the influence and renown to be seen as superior to the best. In the start of his school vocation, as Nick appears to propose, it was this incomparable physical capacity on the football field that permitted Tom to have preeminent rule over all off the field. Yet, after school, the football heritage finished, and with it, Tom'... ...lected to make a short deft development [that] tore her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald 41) as opposed to concede that the other party could accomplish something without his unequivocal authorization.  From his first presentation right off the bat in the primary part of The Great Gatsby as far as possible of the second, Tom endeavors to continually help everybody around him to remember his capacity through his activities, contemplations, and discourse. Like illustrious subjects faithful to their lord, he accepts that everybody is under him and should regard and comply with all his desires. Through the dominance of Fitzgerald's graceful hand, a character has been made to which riches has become a religion and god has become an exemplification of himself.  Works Cited Fitzgerald, F. Alcohol Tobacco vs. Illegal Drugs - Free Essay Example

In the article â€Å"Alcohol, Tobacco Worse Than Illegal Drugs† a new British study found that alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than some illegal narcotics such as marijuana or Ecstasy. Professor David Nutt of Britain’s Bristol University and some colleagues proposed the study and found a new structure for the â€Å"classification of harmful substances based on the actual risk posed to society† (Conroy, 2007). The researchers used three factors to determine how harmful any drug is : â€Å"the physical harm to the user, the drug’s potential for addiction, and the impact on society of drug use† (Conroy, 2007). Then two groups of experts (psychiatrists or medical expertise) were asked to select scores of twenty different drugs. In the rankings, heroin and cocaine were the most dangerous, followed by barbiturates and street methadone. Alcohol ranked the fifth-most dangerous drug, while tobacco ranked the ninth. Surprisingly, cannabis came in the eleventh spot and Ecstasy was near the bottom of the list. Nutt believes that the current British drug system is â€Å"ill thought-out and arbitrary† (Conroy, 2007). Even though different countries use different ways to classify drugs, none of them use a system like Nutt proposed and he hopes that his new system could â€Å"serve as a framework for international authorities† (Conroy, 2007). The information in this article and the study that Professor Nutt conducted are factual. There are more than one article about the study on the internet. In the article it says that alcohol is more harmful than marijuana, which is true. In 2001, there were 331 alcohol overdose deaths and 0 marijuana overdose deaths (CDC, 2004). Also, when marijuana is in its nature form it is â€Å" one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man† (Kapperler Potter, 2005, p. 199), and that marijuana is â€Å"far safer than many foods we commonly consume†(Kapperler Potter, 2005, p. 199). Alcohol has far more dangerous long-term effects than marijuana such as permanent damage to vital organs, several different types of cancer, high blood pressure, and malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies (Alcohol , 2006). While marijuana smoke contains â€Å"some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco, sometimes in higher concentrations† (Marijuana , 2010). At the top of the charts is cocaine and heroin ,which is also accurate. Cocaine is at the top because it â€Å"is the most powerful natural stimulant available to man† (Kapperler Potter, 2005, p. 194). While heroine is â€Å"the single most abused opiate in the US, and has one of the most serious addiction rates of all illegal drugs† (Heroin: one,). The reasons why these two are so dangerous is because when on heroin the â€Å"mental functioning is slow and disoriented†(Heroin: one, ), and while cocaine can result in â€Å"acute cardiovascular or cerebrovascular emergencies—severe circulation problems to the heart or brain† (Cocaine and crack, ). In the article, it is stated that â€Å"tobacco causes 40 percent of all hospital illnesses, while alcohol is blamed for more than half of all visits to hospital emergency rooms,† and â€Å"the substances also harm society in other ways, damaging families and occupying police services† (Conroy, 2007), which is true. In 2000, the leading cause of death was tobacco at 435,00 deaths (Kapperler Potter, 2005, p. 203). Also, there were 85,000 deaths from alcohol and another 16,700 from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes. This article stated facts conducted from a experiment that Professor Nutt and colleagues performed with the help of experts. Due to the information that was stated, this article is factual and had no intent of providing myths about the subject. The three factors that the researchers creates a measurement to determine the rankings. This scale shows accuracy and helps support validity and reliability. It’s important to know the truth about this topic because many people think that marijuana and some other illegal drugs are more dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. However, the article informs people that alcohol and tobacco are more harmful than one thinks and that countries should provide a different way to classify drugs. References Alcohol . River Birch Is a Favored Yard Tree in the Southern U.S.

River birch has been called the most beautiful of American trees by Prince Maximilian, the emperor of Mexico when he toured North America shortly before his short-lived reign. It is a favorite yard tree in the southern United States and is sometimes messy to maintain if you are not hands-on when dealing with your yard. Betula nigra, also known as red birch, water birch, or black birch, is the only birch with a range that includes the southeastern coastal plain. It is uniquely the only spring-fruiting birch in North America. Although the wood has limited usefulness, the trees beauty makes it an ornamental highlight, especially at the northern and western extremes of its natural range.  Most river birch bark peels in colorful flakes of brown, salmon, peach, orange, and lavender and is a bonus for regions deprived of paper and white birches.  Ã‚   In his book, The Urban Tree Book, journalist, novelist, and publisher Arthur Plotnik entices amateur arborists to go tree peeping in U.S. cities. He gives vivid descriptions of trees he spots along his trek: Only the shaggy brown river birch seems truly adapted to cities, holding its own with urban heat blasts and the deadly borer. River Birch Habit and Range River birch grows naturally from southern New Hampshire south and west to the Texas Gulf Coast.  River birch is well named as it loves riparian (wet) zones, adapts well to wet sites, and reaches its maximum size in rich alluvial soils of the lower Mississippi Valley. Even though it loves wet ecosystems, the tree is heat-tolerant. River birch can survive modest droughts and does not compete with your lawn for water. River birch transplants easily at any age and grows into a medium tree of about 40 feet and rarely to 70 feet. River birch occupies large eastern north-south ranges in North America from Minnesota to Florida. The tree needs direct sunlight and is intolerant to shade.   River Birch Varieties The best river birch cultivars are the Heritage and Dura-Heat varieties. The Heritage or Cully cultivar was selected in 2002 as the tree of the year by the Society of Municipal Arborists. The trees wood has very little commercial value but is extremely popular as an ornamental tree that features salmon-cream to brownish bark that peels to reveal a creamy white inner bark that can be nearly as white as the white-barked birches. It is hardy  in  all U.S. climate zones, it is fast-growing, nicely forked, wind and ice resistant.   According to Michael Dirr,  horticulturist and a professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia, who praise the varietal in his book, Trees: Heritage river birch is an excellent selection with superior vigor, larger leaves, and greater resistance to leaf spot. Dura-Heat is a somewhat smaller cultivar that features creamy white bark color, better tolerance to summer heat, better insect and disease resistance, and superior foliage to the species. It typically grows 30 to 40 feet tall as a single trunk or multi-trunked tree. Leaves, Flowers, and Fruit of a River Birch The tree has male and female catkins, which are slim, cylindrical  flower  clusters that are grouped in 3s. The small cone-like fruit  opens and sheds small  nutlet  seeds in spring. What makes yard work a chore with the river birch are the falling catkins, fruit, and flaking bark that constantly litter the yard. The summer leaves have a leathery texture with a dark green upper side and light green on its  underside. The leaf edges are teethlike, with a double serrated appearance. The leaves are in the shape of ovals. In the autumn, the leaf color is golden-yellow to yellow-brown, and leaves have a tendency to drop quickly. River Birch Hardiness Zone River birch  is hardy through zone 4 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture zone map. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map identifies how well plants will withstand the cold winter temperatures. The map divides North America into 13 zones, of 10 degrees each, ranging from -60 F to 70 F. So, for zone 4, the minimum average temperatures are between -30 F and -20 F, which includes the entire U.S. with the exception of Alaska.

Evolution And Evolution Of Evolution - 1079 Words

Ever wondered when the course of humans began or better yet if people started the way that they are? Modern humans started 200,000 years ago, but were not alway like this. The process of evolution brought us to humans. According to Evolution: The Human Story, evolution is the process by which organisms change over the course of generations. It is also compelling because ancestors can give rise to other relatives or descendants. Archeologists now know that not only humans evolved because paleontologists discovered a bird that lived up to 1.5 million years ago. Scientists have been studying the past and they discovered ape-like hominids evolved into humans. Many fossils have been discovered all over the world and scientists have proof that there were many other species before people that have finally evolved into humans. Other traces of evidence, such as similarities between related living organisms, were used by Charles Darwin to develop his theory of natural selection, and are still used today. DNA testing, were not available in Darwin s time, but are used by scientists today to learn more about evolution. Evolution has brought us from apes to human, and has a riveting way of its own. Managing Organizations and Leading People Productivity

Question: Discuss about theManaging Organizations and Leading Peoplefor Productivity. Answer: Introduction: Organization or the workplace culture is typically important to maintaining employee motivation and high level of productivity. Here, as a senior manager I will opt for talking and directing the US team leader to integrate the principles of responsible leadership for improving motivation and the scope of communication within the team. Discussion: According to Herzbergs two factor theory, the hygiene factors are needed to be eliminated and the motivation factors are needed to be upheld for maintaining employee motivation and consistent performance. Here, I will direct the team leader to provide supportive supervision and recognize the contribution of Apala and other team members. Moreover, as discussed by Meyer (2014), in the organizational setup eliminating the communication barriers like stereotyping or cultural prejudice can create employee dissatisfaction. The team leader of the US team is being prejudiced which is affecting the organizational culture. Hence, I will document clear code of conduct and reporting procedure for the employees. Moreover, as mentioned by Thomas and Peterson (2014), in the culturally diversified workplace, the principal of inclusivity that provides equal opportunity to all employees needed to be upheld. Hence, I will introduce the policy of documenting the daily performance report for all the empl oyees and an annual appraisal (depending on the daily performance report) for them. Thus, the employees will be made responsible for each of their job role and the issue of nepotism will be eliminated. Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be said that as the senior manager, I will opt for responsible leadership and communicate with the team leader regarding her behavioural and leadership approaches. By introducing the policy of inclusivity and regular monitoring, I will be able to track the performance of the employees and employee satisfaction will be maintained. References: Meyer, J.P. (2014). Salvador Dali and his Abraham Lincoln free essay sample

Salvador Dali remains to this day my favorite painter. At one point I wanted to study art history because of Cezanne’s bogusly beautiful evolution from the painting equivalent of skepticism to solidarity, but in the end Dali won out (and I now want to be in the CIA). Cezanne has this intricate beauty to his lines, and a bit of poetic fuzziness around things that should be clear, but for an insatiably questioning mind his work becomes dysfunctional in its perfection. In it, one has to analyze the mundane to find the brilliant. For Dali, one has to analyze the brilliant to find the mundane. Something about this role reversal, for indeed most birds hide their brilliant plumage under some dowdy feathers, really excites me. Dali and I also have a lot in common, since he too was an aficionado of Freud, water, Catholicism, Abraham Lincoln, Hitler’s maniacal rise to power, stating the obvious, strange moustaches, Spain, and true love. We will write a custom essay sample on Salvador Dali and his Abraham Lincoln or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My favorite painting of Dali’s conveniently explains itself: Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters becomes a Portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Every time I look at it, although nothing ever literally appears the same, I find something I empathize with or at least understand. I suppose he provides the optimism I want from life, the knowledge that even scrutinized from multiple angles, a situation can always present itself in a positive light. I will always be a Dali fan. Every time I search his name on the internet I am dismayed that the automatic fill-in results on my Google homepage range from â€Å"Salvation Army† to â€Å"salmon,† and leave me to type the rest of his name with a determined accuracy. (I know, I could just figure out how to change my Mozilla settings.) In art, and in life, I have found more satisfaction in and with Salvador Dali and his kind’s unfailing optimism, even if the upfront Cezanne-types are initially understandable and enjoyable. His work taught me that everything means something if it’s examined properly – and that something will usually (pleasantly) surprise you.

Free Essays on Suffering In “Crime And Punishment“

Suffering The motif of suffering plays a large role in Fyodor Dostoyevky’s Crime and Punishment. The motif of the need of suffering is used throughout the novel to produce the book's theme: great suffering leads to salvation and the expiation of man's sins. In Crime and Punishment, several characters undergo much pain and personal anguish. Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov and Katerina Ivanovna Marmeladov are two characters in the novel that undergo suffering and inner turmoil. Both these characters suffer throughout the novel in many different fashions but the effects of their suffering are the same. Raskolnikov's suffering has a direct relationship with his guilt over his crime. It is also an indirect result of his dual personality and his obsession to prove his â€Å"Extraordinary Man† theory. He is represented as being either cold, intellectual and isolated from society, or as being warm and compassionate. In the novel, he is shown as warm and compassionate when he tries to help a prostitute being solicited by an older man and when he gives most of his money to the Marmeladovs, The murder of the pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, is the result of his intellectual side's need to determine whether or not he fits his â€Å"Extraordinary Man† theory. The humane and compassionate side of his personality was forced to suffer because of the actions of his cold and isolated side. After committing the murder, Raskolnikov’s body turns on him, mentally and physically. He become very ill and his personality is not what it was before. Federal Funding For Emergency Management Solutions Essay - 1

Federal Funding For Emergency Management Solutions - Essay Example During the fiscal year 2008, most of the federal funding for emergency management was focused on the research purposes(Moore, 2008). This was because of many of the hazard areas needed to be tackled with equal measure. For example, after the revision of the presidential budget from operating plan FY 2007, most of their funding changed positively towards the research activities as compared to the first-responder preparedness(Moore, 2008). The U.S government was under war with terrorism and most of the funding was spent on this activity(Bullock, Jane, George, and Damon, 2012). However, little research was being done on other areas that would affect the American citizens in equal measure. For instance, not much was done to combat the never-ending effects of natural disasters. The change in weather, Katrina, and drought really had a greater toll on people as compared to the government’s activities in Afghanistan and Iraq(Bullock, Jane, George, and Damon, 2012). Such disasters prov ed to be more dangerous by killing many citizens and destroying properties of great monetary value(Meade, Charles, and Megan, 2003). If not undertaken or solved in appropriate manner will have a huge negative impact to the economy of the country. Therefore, the American public would be served well by transferring funding from the first-responder preparedness to research and  development.

Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman Essay Example for Free

Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman Essay This poem filled my mind with great memories snd make think of my loved ones who are now Angels. I am still feeling the connection. In my opinion, I can say that peopleare physically dead be we can keep them in our mind alive as long as we want them to be part of our lives. Father and I had different character. We had the same interest such as reading, watching news, assisting on conference-debates. We had the same taste but we were hardly shared our opinion. This was because of me, I was very shy when I was a teenager. That makes our relationship† very special† and I miss it deeply. We did many things together that help us to become good friend such as driving. When I was 19 year old, my captain taught to drive and new situations always make me bit nervous, and my first drive was no exception. Things were not quite easy for me, but my captain was very patient. This driving session brought us very close to each other because I could not avoid him like I used to do before. I had at least 6 hours a week for my driving lesson. My late father there for me every time I needed him. When I started the University, he was driving me to school like a little girl who starts a kindergarden. I was not the only child in the house but I was so special. Life then was stress free because everything has been taking care of me. My only sadness is that my son will never meet his grandfather spending time together, playing around, but I know even from Heaven he is watching over us. He is now my angel and he is very proud of me because I am following his paths.

Starbucks Organizational Behavior A company's understanding and use of organizational behavior concepts can make or break it. Just as important, if a company ignores these same concepts, it can easily spell disaster. Starbucks intertwines and successfully uses three main organizational behavior concepts to increase the strength of the organization: organizational culture, organizational structure and motivation. The implementation of these concepts has definitely benefited the company, creating a monopoly in the United States as a coffee retailer and service company. Organizational Culture In the text, Organizational Behavior, Stephen P. Robbins defines organizational culture as, "a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations" (2005). Starbucks has a very strong organizational culture and strives to maintain it. Everything centers on the organizational culture within Starbucks. While being a customer service-based company and understanding that the customer satisfaction and loyalty are what will make the company profitable, Starbucks takes a different approach to customer service than other companies. By hiring employees that fit in the organizational culture (ICFAI, 2005) and treating their employees well (Lefevere, n.d.), Starbucks brings in and retains customers through their happy employees. The qualities that Starbucks hires for are "adaptability, dependability and the ability to work in a team" (ICFAI, 2005). The culture is supportive and laid back (Montana, 2005). Howard Shultz, Starbucks president and CEO, has the theory "that if you treat your employees well, they will treat your customers well" (Starbucks, 1997). Downsizing: Is less still more? Essay

Impacts of Downsizing Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In a broad spectrum, managers and organization leaders should center their attention on ensuring human dignity and justices while faced by downsizing needs. The process of selecting the employees to cut off should be ethical and legal. Otherwise, this can cause adverse implications to the employees and the organization at large (Cooper, Pandey & Quick, 2012). With respect to the case study provided, Teresa believes that the company’s decision in regard to downsizing is illegal and unethical. Consequently, Teresa has not only the right or rather mandate to object but also the ethical duty to object. In addition, she should not be prepared to loss her job at the expense of moral grounds.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   With respect to her initiating a discussion of the same on a local internet discussion board can be termed as illegal. This is because legal mechanisms such as litigation have been put in place to allow employees who feel the process of downsizing was not ethical and legal sue the company in a court of law (Cooper, Pandey & Quick, 2012). Evidently, venting her frustration on a local internet is absolutely illegal as this could have adverse impacts to the company and the employees left behind. This is simply because Teresa might give some inaccurate or rather misleading information about the company. The information she provides to the local internet discussion matters a lot as it can invoke diverse reactions by the employees who are left behind hence implicating to malfunctioning of the company. This can result to declining employee’s performance as they may feel that the company is not ensuring human dignity and justice and they ma y also think they are next to be selected for cut off. Why Does Fashion Change Essay - 751 Words

Why does fashion change? Human beings have been using clothes throughout history; however as we notice today garments that were worn in the past are not the same that are being worn today. In this essay I will develop the question ‘Why does fashion change?’ and if such changes are due to fashion as such or if there is any external influences such as marketing and media. Every change in society, including differences between cultures and living styles is reflected in the way people dress and types of accessories being utilized. As a result, it can be seen today how the increase in the number of hours that people spend in leisure activities has generated the need in people to wear a wider range of clothes according to each†¦show more content†¦What is fashionable is imposed by marketing. As Mark Easay says, ‘The ethos of the fashion industry revolves around seasonality’. He also emphasizes on the industry’s mechanism in developing new goods despite the product could already exist in the market. (2002: p 34). Fashion also changes as a response to variations in markets and economy. Globalization and the possibility of trading opportunities in many countries in the world have induced a decrease in cost which has obliged certain companies to implement different marketing strategies to compete successfully in modern markets. A clear example is Marks and Spencer which started to feel the pressure generated by specialist chains (Benetton and Next) and Tesco and Asda who used to import goods from countries with a lower level cost. To compete, Marks and Spencer felt the need to increase the speed which they used to launch their new collections with changes in style. (Easey 2002). Continuing with the above, Kawamura also idicates that changes in fashion could be induced mainly by economic and sociologic aspects. She states that a common approach from an economic perspective is that designers and manufacturers influence consumer behaviour to develop the market and increase trade. On the other hand the sociologial aspect idicates that chages in fashion do not obey to the amout spent byShow MoreRelatedLimitations on BMI Model Bodies1084 Words   |  5 Pagescenterfold of a Playboy magazine. Breaching Social Norm Experiment - 922 Words

For my breaching social norm experiment I was determined to do something I would never do even if it was a dare, especially since my ability to interact with strangers is not the best. So, I decided to make people feel uncomfortable by holding their hand. What I would do is walk up to the person from behind and slowly make my way to their hand to make them feel even more uncomfortable. People normally hold hands with their significant other, or with someone they know like a friend or family member, so to be holding hands with a stranger is out of the ordinary and awkward. In preparation to starting our experiment it took my confidant Carla and I about an hour to finally initiate the first move. Before even holding hands with strangers my mind was swirling with multiple questions and thoughts, like â€Å"Why am I even doing this?†, â€Å"I don’t appreciate making people feel uncomfortable.†, â€Å"Why is Mrs.Henry torturing me!†, â€Å"Can I just not do it ?†, and so on. In addition to my thoughts and questions, I felt myself sweating and my stomach felt as if it was in a twisted knot. While I approached my first victim I felt the temperature of my body raise up to boiling point and the color of my skin turn from snow white to lava red in a split second. To make things worse once I held onto the lady s hand she was gripping onto mine and was holding on tight, and my reaction was to laugh because when you are in an uncomfortable situation you honestly don’t know how to react.Show MoreRelatedMy Breaching Social Norm Experiment921 Words   |  4 PagesFor my breaching social norm experiment, I was determined to do something I would never do even if it was a dare, especially since my ability to interact with strangers is not what I consider advanced. Gladstone’s liberalism Free Essays

This question focuses on Gladstone’s liberalism and to what extent he applied it during his first ministry, 1868-74. Liberalism is a political philosophy that stresses individual liberty, equal opportunity and rights, Victorian liberalism was a mixture of ideology, morality and self-interest, and it advocated civil and religious liberty. Gladstone was the embodiment of Victorian liberalism, he tried to put forward his liberalism but he often found that he fought a lone battle in the cabinet. We will write a custom essay sample on Gladstone’s liberalism or any similar topic only for you Order Now To assess the extent of how much Gladstone’s liberalism was applied during his first ministry, I will be looking at the acts that were passed during this period and looking at how liberal in nature they were. His attention was mainly focused on Ireland as he said in his own words â€Å"It is my mission to pacify Ireland†. He put forward 3 acts and bills concerning Ireland, at the time these were fairly controversial, as he was one of the first Prime Ministers to address the Irish question. The first act that Gladstone passed as Prime Minister was The Disestablishment of the Irish Church Act. This broke the connection between church and state and ended the Anglican church’s status as the established church of Ireland, this aimed to reduce endowments and redistributing a third of its annual reserve to non-religious ends, e. g. improving hospitals. This was quite a liberal act as it allowed people to freely attend whichever church they wanted. This however showed Gladstone’s willingness to solve a problem without appreciating its background and not understanding its immediate practical requirements. Th Irish Church Act was Gladstone’s first liberal move and gave an indication of the path his future acts would take. His second act in 1870 was The Irish Land Act. This was initially one of his most liberal measures as it gave a lot of the protection to the tenant, the individual, but it was diluted so its effectiveness was reduced. It said that tenants should have greater protection from eviction and should be compensated if their rent was deemed excessive, be given compensation for improvements and repairs they had made and that new tenants should compensate the old tenants for their share in the property. The most important part of this at was the compensation if the rent was deemed excessive; Lord Salisbury objected to this clause as he said that no court had the right to adjudicate on the fairness of rent. This omission made the bill limited and unremarkable, this caused anger as it did not live up to its expectations and it failed to realise the aim of the land-lord. At first this bill promised to be a very important bill as it finally gave protection to the tenants but in the end it just made the tenants position less secure as land-lords could now freely increase rent as there was no-one to stop them. This should have been another success for Gladstone but after it had passed through parliament it became just another ordinary act. The Education Act of 1870 put forward by William Forster allowed for the continuation of denominational schools, but in districts where schooling was deficient a locally elected board would be set up. This had the power to organize schools and enforce the attendance of children aged between 5 and 12 who were not being educated in any other way, the boards could also decide whether religious teaching was to be given in their schools. This mainly benefited the working class who before had been unable to send their children to school because it was too expensive so the children went to work instead. The two main organizations involved in this act were the National Education League and Union. The League was non-conformist and wanted gratuitous secular education, the Union was Anglican and wanted religious teaching. The pressure resulting from the conflict between the two groups produced the Cowper Temple Clause; this meant that only non-denominational religious education was to be provided in schools receiving state aid. This was an important liberal act as it gave educational opportunities to the working class who had never before had the chance of free schooling. Other important acts included The 1870 Civil Service Act. This meant that all positions within the civil service were open to public competition, this was obviously a liberal act as it gave the opportunity to people to hold positions which had never been open to them as before a system of patronage was used. Army reforms were also introduced these were the 1871 Army regulation Act. The aim of this was â€Å"To combine in one harmonious whole all the branches of our military forces†, this abolished the system of purchase, an officer bought his commission and could sell it for whatever he could get, and also flogging in peacetime was abolished. The 1871 University Test Act made positions of teaching at Oxford and Cambridge open to non-Anglicans. The Ballot Act introduced the secret ballot, this meant that people could express their opinions without being persecuted. The Trade Union Act of 1871 legalized trade unions. Workers were now protected and had their interests looked after so if they felt that they were being treated unfairly they could do something about it. All of these acts cohered with the liberal philosophy, they gave long overdue equal rights and opportunities to everyone. One of the final acts by Gladstone was the Licensing Act of 1872. This tightened the control on licensing and fixed public houses opening and closing times, with this Gladstone did his party immense harm by alienating brewers and distillers who naturally turned to the conservatives. Gladstone had no doubt in his mind what had caused his election defeat in 1974, in a letter to his brother he commented † We have been borne down in a torrent of gin and beer†, this act did more harm than good and ended Gladstone’s first ministry. Gladstone’s serious view of life, his devotion to progress and his insistence on justice and right made him a leader who was idolized or hated. His was the figurehead of liberalism and his many liberal acts showed how passionate he was about it. He was not a great Prime minister but during his first ministry he tried very hard to spread liberalism that appealed rather to a particular mentality that might be found in all classes, so in fact it was above class. In conclusion Gladstone’s liberalism was his belief in equal opportunities, in an era when this was not available to everyone it was a very brave belief as many of the population could not afford schooling, but thanks to Gladstone this problem was now fixed. He applied his liberalism to a great extent as he introduced some very important changes, these being the Education and Irish Church acts. The way his ministry ended showed that he had not finished and more was to come, mainly his pursuit of Irish Home Rule. He was probably more important for what he was than what he did. How to cite Gladstone’s liberalism, Papers

Investment Analysis Financial Management †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Investment Analysis Financial Management? Answer: Introducation The decision of the management is the most critical in ascertaining the main basis of the establishment of the business. So it must be clear that the decisions made by the management should be perfect and there should not be any flaws in the decision making. If any flaw would remain in the decision of the management then it could lead to bad impact on the profits and losses of the organization. The most appropriate option should be selected so that the management can get the desired results keeping in mind the factors affecting the goal of the management. Since the business environment in todays world is dynamic in nature hence only a decision keeping in mind a particular goal cannot be implemented. The result should be continuously evaluated so that the decision proves to be correct one and the desired results can be achieved (Berman, Knight and Case, n.d.). Usually there are two types of decisions taken top down approach or the bottom down approach. Depending on the type of decision the management is taking either of the two approaches is used. Although the decisions of the management is necessary to attain a particular result but the execution of the decision is more important for achieving a particular goal. It is important for the management to keep a healthy relationship with the lower level and the middle level management so that the decisions can be executed in the best possible manner. If the lower level or the middle level management does not function properly then any best decision in the world would not be successful hence there must be continuous good relationship with all levels of the management so that each and every person in the organization could feel the responsibility of the work given and function properly (Shim and Siegel, 2008). The management while making its decisions must keep in mind that it needs to make best use of available resources. But in most of the cases the decision of the management gets struck by the availability of the capital hence the management uses the capital budgeting method in order to get the best return with the available resources. Capital budgeting can be done using various techniques. They are discounted cash flow method, internal rate of return method, net present value method and payback period. These methods are described as follows: Discounted Cash Flow method (DCF method): In this method, the future cash flows are discounted to their net present values by using cost of the capital so that the present value of the investments can be evaluated. The main purpose is to identify the time value of money by discounting the future cash flows (Bruner, Eades and Schill, 2017). Internal Rate of Return method (IRR method): In this method the net present value from all the cash flows from a particular project is made zero by using a discount rate. This method is used to determine the potential of a particular project. The formula used for internal rate of return method and the net present value method is same. If the internal rate of return derived is greater than the rate of return the organization desires then the company will move ahead with the project however if the rate of return derived is lesser than the rate of return the organization desires then the company will forego the project and will not invest its money in the project (Saltelli, Chan and Scott, 2008). The calculation of the internal rate of return is as follows. The same example is also used for the net present value method: Net Present value method (NPV method): Net present value is basically difference of the present value of the cash inflow and the present value of the cash outflow. A project with a positive net present value will be taken and with a negative one will be foregone. For example: In case of two assignments A and B where the required rate of return is 10.25% and with different cash flow structures, the net present value of the cash flows will be shown as below: Discounted payback period: Breaking down the starting expenditure by scanning future cash flows and monetary time values are steps of a capital budgeting method which is discounted payback period (Taylor, 2008). According to this, if a project is to be undertaken by the company then the target period must be greater than the discounted payback period which is calculated. Sensitivity Analysis Evaluation of values from different types variables are taken into consideration in this type of analysis. Alteration in the dependent variables with a change in the independent variables is recorded by an analyst in accordance with some constant circumstances. Also known as What if analysis. This analysis is useful for both corporate and personal level decisions. The main business of t6his analysis is to record the alteration in the output value in accordance with a change in an input value while keeping all the other inputs constant (Galbraith, Downey and Kates, 2002). For conducting the sensitivity analysis, following measures should be paid attention to: Evidence should be present for as the base case output; like NPV at a particular base case input value (V1) for which the sensitivity needs to be measured after having all other inputs constant. All the input values must be kept aside and a new value must be undertaken to evaluate the output. After the above processes the %change in both input and output must be evaluated. Dividing the %change in output with the %change in input will reap the final amount of sensitivity. As per the evaluation made, it is clearly evident that if the value of the sensitivity is higher, then the output will be more influenced by any alterations in the input value or the opposite case may be. Scenario Analysis Process related to the evaluation of the estimated value in accordance with the alteration in the key factors such as interest rates, etc for a fixed span of time is referred to as scenario analysis. Calculation of various reinvestment rates is the main work of this analysis with which maximum profit can be attained by the company. All this scanning and reporting is done by a professional analyst. Values of various portfolios keeps on changing as per the changes in the environment and this analysis helps in its detection as to follow the principle of What if analysis. While investing in a particular project, it is advised to use this form of analysis to have a vision of all the ups and downs range probability of the project which keeps on changing and thus increases the threat of irreversible investment or grave loss. Thus, this analysis detects the flaws and the risks of the project at an early stage so as to prevent the losses which can be suffered buy the investor (TULSIAN, 2016). Standard deviation of the monthly or daily security returns can be regarded as the best process to grab the scenario analysis technique. The above procedure evaluated the value of a current portfolio. This analysis provides the analyst with a satisfactory reason as of why the value of the portfolio has been subjected to alteration. There exists some differences between the two above mentioned analysis and they are not at all similar to each other. This can be understood by a simple example like; if an equity analyst is keen enough to record the impact of both the sensitivity and the scenario analysis on Earning per Share(EPS) then he will have to evaluate it through the given data of earnings(P/E) multiple (Holland and Torregrosa, 2008). Break Even Analysis If in a span of accounting period a company undertaken a project which included expenses and then he company carries on with its work to gain surplus capital which can nullify the expense, then in that case it is said Break even analysis. So it is clear that there will be no gain or loss and thus the net income of the company will be zero. This analysis acts as a boon to clarify the amount of sales which must be made by the company so as to nullify all the expenses though the net income of the company will be zero (Khan and Jain, 2014).Accounting Breakeven analysis: Accounting breakeven analysis occurs when the net income is zero. This can only happen if the total revenue or capital gained is similar and equal to the total expense of the project. This can be achieved when we calculate the ratio of variable cost to sales. Taking an example, if there is a given ratio of 0.65 then this states that with every rupee of sales of each unit, the contribution is 0.35. Thus, the contribution m argin ratio comes to 0.35. Therefore the breakeven point can be calculated by the following equation: Breakeven Point = (Fixed Cost + Depreciation) /Contribution Margin Ratio.Non addition of the depreciation leads to the breakeven point to be known as the cash breakeven point. Zero returns on the sale clearly depict that that a particular value has been in contact with the breakeven point. As there in no profit in the project so the money which is invested by the company will be recovered with no additional amount (Reilly and Brown, 2012). Financial breakeven point: If the initial investment is found to be similar to the cash flow then the NVP breakeven occurs. When the net present value is equal to zero then the analyst has to be provided with the transaction related to the amount of sales so as to evaluate the final breakeven point. The term simulation refers to the duplication of a condition or method. Monte Carlo simulation can be thought of as the analysis of the methods that have been copied from the original ones or can be defined as the analysis of the key features of the system of random numbers by the process of duplication. Adding up of the advantages with the ones of the capital budgeting can be thought to be possessed by the simulation analysis as it gives the analyst a clear vision of the risk that prevails in the project. This analysis also keeps a track record of all the alteration being made in different variables of the company. The following steps are to be followed to perform this analysis: Variables need to be categorized for both cash outflows and also for inflows. Every variable related formula must be highlighted and evaluation of probability distribution for every individual variable should be done. Installation of a computer program so as to select a value from every probability distribution of each variable should be done so as to finalize the successfulness or failure of a project by analyzing such values. The result of this calculation is not a small value but it is rather a profitability distribution of all the feasible expected returns. A list of limitation for the capital budgeting prevails in the system though it is important for decision making processes. Inapt and mysterious investments arises difficulty in the preparation of perfect budget. It is advised that all the decisions should be seriously scanned because they comprise of heavy amounts which are irreparable in nature Conclusion From the above assignment we have come to know various techniques and the importance of capital busgeting which are summarised below: Evaluation of the risks: Threats prevails in any long-term investments which are termed as capital costs. Capital budgeting provides the company a safe and secure way to get hold on such expenses (Clarke and Clarke, 1990). Finding the best course of action: This provides the firm with all possible probability of investments from which the company can easily choose the most profitable one. Its main target is to provide profits to the shareholders and thus to increase the dominance and respect of the company in the market. Long run of the business: Reduction in the expense with an increase in the profit at the same time can be sensed while using capital budgeting. This technique makes the company a long race horse while shielding it against abrupt investments. Also helps in analysis, assessing appropriate arrangement (Fairhurst, 2015). Hamlet Play Essays (520 words) - Characters In Hamlet,

Hamlet Play The Play Hamlet by William Shakespeare is arguably his finest tragedy ever written. The characterizations of the cast are odd shaped pieces that fit perfectly in this puzzle of confusion and anger. The contrasts and comparisons between and within the characters paint a colorful picture of tragedy and betrayal. Three characters that display intricate characteristics are Polonius, King Claudius, and Hamlet. Polonius is a confused man filled with nothingness. He is just a shell of a person who will agree with those who overpower him. His mind is disillusioned and distraught. Throughout the play, until he is killed, he believes that Hamlet is acting crazy because Hamlet loves Ophelia, Polonius' daughter. "This is the very ecstasy of love...As oft as any passion under heaven That does afflict our natures." It is these characteristics that lead him to his death. Following orders by the king, Polonius hides behind a curtain to spy on Hamlet. Unfortunately, Polonius spoke at the wrong time and is killed for spying. Polonius was just a pawn that meant nothing. "Thou wretched, rash, intruding fool, farewell!" King Claudius is a conniving man. He is the brother of the previous king, King Hamlet. Claudius' devious mind and horrible actions were the cause of King Hamlet's death. "...With juice of crushed hebona in a vial And in the porches of [King Hamlet's] ears did pour...." However his stone cold mind frame soon melted to fright as he saw a reenactment of his action in a play put forth by Hamlet, the son of King Hamlet. "Give me some light. Away!" Soon after, Claudius' devious mind began working again to plot Hamlet's death. Backfiring with his plan, he quickly picks up where he left off with another scheme to eliminate Hamlet. Leartes, the son of Polonius, whom was killed by Hamlet, comes to their land. Claudius relays the bad news and gets Leartes to vow vengeance. Through all of the scheming and treachery, The king's true face is shown and is killed. Hamlet is a clever and intelligent man; however, in every tragedy there must be a tragic hero, and Hamlet is the tragic hero. Confused about his father's mysterious death, Hamlet is trying to find some answers. Surprisingly, those answers came from a ghost. It was the Ghost of his father. Being a religious man, Hamlet was weary about the validity of the ghosts claims that Claudius killed Hamlet's father. Hamlet had a witty plan to put on a play depicting his father's death in front of King Claudius. With King Claudius reaction, Hamlet knew that his father was murdered, and began thinking of ways to avenge his father's death. Being slightly devious himself, Hamlet planned to catch Claudius in his own treacherous web. He could not just run him through at that time because of his religious beliefs. However, his part as the tragic hero kicked in and died soon after killing Claudius. "O, I die, Horatio! The potent poison quite o'er-crows my spirit." Overall, Hamlet was an ideal tragedy. What made it ideal was the characteristics of the characters and the way that they all became intertwined throughout the play. Hamlet was the strongest character, mentally and ethically. Although Hamlet did not come out on top, he completed his life's work and is in a better place.
